Video: When I grow up, I want to be a…robot?

Will artificial intelligence, robots, robotic process automation (RPA) and chatbots take our jobs? That’s the question that many want an answer to. According to PwC’s 2018 Workforce of the Future report, 37% of people are worried about automation putting jobs at risk, and that number is rising.
For most people, unemployment due to technology won’t be an issue that they face. While lower-value roles may disappear, it doesn’t necessarily follow that this will lead to mass unemployment. Robotic automation will also create new jobs and change the nature of existing ones, likely for the better.
In the longer term, however, will there be enough jobs for everyone? Will the exponential intelligence of robots end up taking over ‘work’ as we know it?
As our UK colleague and Artificial Intelligence Programme Leader, Rob McCargow, notes, we are entering a period of time when the essence of our jobs, dignity and pride are all potentially at stake. For all the good that AI brings – and there is much of it when its use is applied to aiding the environment, health, education and poverty issues we face – what about the bad?
Of course, there are no concrete answers to such questions just yet, but as you’ll see in the below video in which Rob speaks on how we prepare the next generation for the impact of AI, they might not actually need to be answered entirely by us in any case.
