‘Digital Identities’ are the foundational components of your digital services, representing critical information about people, data and devices. With the growing dependency on digital services causing businesses and government organisations to expose this information to cyber threats, securing your digital identities has never been more critical.

What is Identity and Access Management (IAM)?

Identity and Access Management (IAM) is an essential component of cybersecurity that enables you to manage digital identities and user access within your IT environment. Through the adoption of strong IAM practices, organisations can restrict, govern and monitor access to data, systems and resources, helping to reduce cyber risk and protect critical information.

Identity and Access Management (IAM) services are fundamental to security by providing management and governance capabilities and building on the principle of security by design. Beyond digital trust and security, it provides sustainable business value by improving the efficiency of your digital interactions with customers, employees, contractors, business partners and your supply chain.

Why is Digital Identity important?

Giving back citizens full control of their identity

Many services, from accessing government benefits to logging into a bank account, are now being conducted digitally. Citizen identity enables the digitisation of identifiable credentials (i.e. drivers license, birth certificate, education certificate) to facilitate access to these services across both government and private sector. It thus performs a vital function, enabling people to do their everyday work and save time, while at the same time maintaining their security.

Enabling employees and customers to drive growth

Failure to optimise and streamline identity and access management can have an enormous impact on experience and efficiency within and beyond your organisation. It can delay onboarding of new employees and lead to countless hours of lost productivity.

For your customers, unwieldy barriers throughout the customer journey can lead to missed sales and dwindling loyalty. Mishandled identity management can also raise privacy concerns, making it challenging to maintain consumer trust at a time when fears around data privacy and harmful data practices run high2.

A key control to prevent risks

Identity and access management (IAM) has long been fundamental to security and, in turn, business success. Failure to properly govern employees’ levels of access and privilege within systems raises the risk of data leaks and increases vulnerability to cyber attacks, at a time when these are on the rise1. IAM also facilitates customer authentication which in turn combats risks of identity theft.

Identity management of customers, staff, contractors and external suppliers require a significant amount of IT security spend, and just 18% of Australian businesses are currently realising the benefits from the implementation of identity and access management investments (Digital Trust Insights Survey 2022).

Championing a bold approach to identity management

A partnership with a major financial services organisation saw PwC Australia draw on our global delivery model as well as agile, DevOps and automation practices. Through this joint effort, we built on and future-proofed the company’s robust identity management capability, fine-tuning security, improving efficiency and unlocking hidden pockets of value across the company. Digital identity processes were transformed from a security risk into an organisational asset built around clarity and agility — one that empowers the company to consolidate existing skills and react swiftly to future challenges. The collaboration also helped the organisation seamlessly manage its diverse workforce and accelerate its progress towards strategic goals.

Emerge stronger with the right preparation

The significance of digital identity cannot be understated. Businesses addressing and investing in proper identity and access management will not only see a reduction in the risk of costly and disruptive cyber-attacks and data loss but will also benefit from better customer and employee experience.

Yet digital identity is not something that can be fixed overnight in response to a breach or audit finding. Strong and effective access management requires sustained focus across people, processes and technologies, from authentication to authorisation, user management and provisioning and identity storage and integration.
