Data management strategy implementation

Establishing a strong enterprise-wide data management strategy to enable trusted, secure, and appropriately accessible data

Opportunity

A “data-centric” organisation, this financial services organisation sought to uplift its data management and analytics capabilities so that existing and new data sources could be analysed to support achievement of its corporate objectives.

The organisation struggled with siloed data and high levels of data duplication and manual data manipulation throughout the various business areas.

The lack of enterprise-wide data management left the organisation open to large reporting and reputational risks as well as significant ongoing inefficiencies.

The organisation identified that it’s people were unable to access, understand and control their data sets effectively or efficiently.

Solution

Worked with this organisation to uplift capability and ensure data is trusted, secure, and appropriately accessible:

  • Assessed the organisations data management strategy against leading practice highlighting key gaps and opportunities for enhancement

  • Performed enterprise-wide data management maturity assessment and identified where capability uplift was required

  • Designed the future state data governance and operating model, including:

    • Key roles and responsibilities and key interaction points across the organisation

    • Structure for a new enterprise data office

    • Roadmap to uplift data capability

    • Revised data management strategy including a new metrics framework, aligned to the organisation's strategic intent

    • New data governance policy

Outcomes

  • Effective management of data as a core asset supporting achievement of the organisation's regulatory obligations, enabling decision-making with quality data and upholding of its reputation

  • Interoperability of data internally and externally, enabling agility and excellence in using insights to inform the organisations core functions and operational decisions

  • Executive endorsement with the establishment of an enterprise data office to deliver strategic capability uplift, support data migration projects, and work with the business on priority data initiatives focused on improving data that inform operational and policy decisions

“The Executive Committee approved the proposed implementation plan for the data management operating model and funding. This is a tremendous outcome and really sets us up to put data management at the centre of our agenda.”
